University of Puget Sound History

The Methodist Episcopal Church established the University of Puget Sound in downtown Tacoma in 1888. Charles Henry Fowler, the former president of Northwestern University, came up with the idea for a Tacoma college.

University of Puget Sound Programs, Courses, and Schools

Every year, the University of Puget Sound offers 1,200 courses in more than 50 traditional and multidisciplinary fields of study. The university provides over 50 standard and atypical liberal arts and sciences degrees, as well as graduate programs in occupational therapy, physical therapy, and education. There are 12 students for every teaching member.

The University of Puget Sound has selected one of 40 institutions nationwide in the college guide Colleges That Change Lives: 40 Schools That Will Change the Way You Think About Colleges in 2012. For the number of graduates who participate in the Peace Corps, the university has consistently rated among the top five small liberal arts colleges; in 2007, it was the first. The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education have recognized seven University of Puget Sound professors as Washington State Professors of the Year.

University of Puget Sound Campuses

The University of Puget Sound campus is in North Tacoma, Washington, in a mostly residential neighborhood just a few minutes walk from downtown Proctor and the Sixth Avenue district.

The campus of the University of Puget Sound is mostly made up of brick buildings in the Tudor- Gothic architectural style. The majority of the buildings are grouped in quadrants. The North and South Quads, which house residence halls, and the Karlen Quad, which houses Jones Hall, Collins Memorial Library, and the Music Building, are the three primary quads. Silas E. Nelsen, a Tacoma architect, designed the library in 1954. It was later restored.

University of Puget Sound Libraries

 Collins Memorial Library at the University of Puget Sound has approximately 400,000 books and over 130,000 journals, is a partial federal government repository and has significant microform holdings.

The library at the University of Puget Sound was named after former trustee Everill S. Collins. The current University of Puget Sound Library was constructed in 1954. In 1974, a larger expansion was erected. A substantial makeover in 2000 brought new technology and media resources into the Library's premises, transforming it into one of the most popular student gathering areas on campus.

University of Puget Sound Sports and fitness

The Athletics & Aquatics Center at the University of Puget Sound provides sports and fitness services. In August 2016, the Athletics & Aquatics Center officially opened its doors. The $19.4 million facility complements and expands on the university's historic Memorial Fieldhouse, which is located near the intersection of Union Avenue and N. 11th Street in Tacoma. The existing fitness center has been expanded to include more cardio and weight equipment, day-use locker rooms, and a new climbing wall.
