University of Redlands

The University of Redlands is a private research university based in Redlands, California.

University of Redlands History

The University of Redlands grew out of the establishment of two other Baptist institutions, California College in Oakland and Los Angeles University, which was first proposed in 1883 by Charles Button, a preacher who persuaded a group of Southern California Baptist churches to raise funds for what became Los Angeles University. Both institutions were founded in 1886, but LAU never became financially stable, ceased operations as a university, and ran up massive debts. In 1905, the Baptists formed an education commission to raise funds to pay off the debt and reopen the university as a high school. After the 1906 San Francisco earthquake harmed California College's finances, a Baptist commission began considering the liquidation of both institutions in order to establish a new institution in Southern California. The Reverend Jasper Newton Field, a Baptist pastor in Redlands, persuaded the Redlands Board of Trade to propose a $100,000 donation and 40 acres (16 ha) for an interdenominational campus on land donated by a K.C. Wells. The Commission voted in favour of the Redlands proposal on June 27, 1907.
