University of Sopron History

The current University of Sopron has a long history dating back several centuries. Forestry higher education, a long-established field of study and the university's core of education, began in the institute founded for mining and metallurgy education. The School for Training Mining Officers was established by a decree signed by Charles III on June 22, 1735 in Selmecbánya. Maria Theresa established the foundation for academic education with her decree signed on October 22, 1762. In June 1807, a joint meeting of the Treasury and the Chamber of Royal Mint and Mining discussed the establishment of a Forestry School alongside the Mining Academy. The university was renamed the University of Sopron on September 1, 1996.

The campus of the University of Sopron is located in Sopron, Hungary. Sopron is a charming town in northwest Hungary. It is located 220 kilometres from Budapest, 60 kilometres from Vienna, and 90 kilometres from Bratislava, the Hungarian, Austrian, and Slovakian capitals. Sopron, which is close to the border, has a diverse cultural life. This diversity is visible in the town centre, where the architecture combines western European and Hungarian elements.

Library

Central library is the name of the University of Sopron library. The mission of the Central Library and its member libraries is to support the university's learning and searching activities, to support users' intellectual and personal needs by providing free access to information and knowledge resources, and to offer instructional programmes to help and assist in improving skills and competencies for using information sources. The library contributes to the advancement of knowledge society by encouraging and supporting life-long learning. The University of Sopron's Central Library is a professional information institute. It is a public library that is also academic, educational, and technical. It serves as the University of Sopron's central organizational unit. The University of Sopron established a Central Library and a network of public collections.

Housing services

Various dormitories at the University of Sopron provide housing services. The University of Sopron will house you in one of its dormitories known as VUK. Your apartment has two rooms, each with two beds, a bathroom with a toilet, and a small hall with a kitchen counter, sink, fridge, and microwave oven. In our hostel, four students usually share one apartment (2 students per room). On the second and fourth floors, there are common kitchens. After your arrival, please go to the deputy leader's office in the secretariat to sign the contract.

Medical services

Student’s health centre at the University of Sopron provides medical services. Board-certified physicians at the Center can help with the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of minor illnesses, including sinus infections, colds and flu, UTIs, pink eye, and others.

Students clubs

Many sports Student clubs at the University of Sopron provide students with social, recreational, and professional opportunities. Find a new hobby, meet new people, or take on a leadership position. Since that time, it has been one of Europe's oldest sports associations. Today, the association's karate (European Championship gold medals), riding, chess, ski (World Championship silver medals), and orienteering sections have all produced outstanding results.

Visas & immigration support

If you are a student from a non-EU country, you must apply for a student visa at the Hungarian Embassy in your home country at least two months before the start of your studies. With a valid student visa, you can apply for a residence permit either at the embassy or upon arrival. Please keep in mind that obtaining a student visa may take up to 60 days.

If you require a visa, you will require the following documents:

  • Passport visa application form (must be valid for at least 18 months, but preferably valid until the end of your studies.)
  • Three passport-sized pictures
  • Acceptance letter from the university (transit visa if needed)
  • EITHER a bank transfer receipt for tuition payment or a payment certificate from the university OR a Letter of Admission from the receiving institution (if you are a scholarship holder), the Embassy may request your airline reservation or fare ticket, as well as proof of lodging.
