Established in 1827, the University of Toronto is a public research university located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The university has one of the strongest research and teaching faculties in North America. As a collegiate university, it comprises twelve colleges, each with substantial autonomy on financial and institutional affairs. The university has two satellite campuses in Scarborough and Mississauga. The university has 10 Nobel Laureates affiliated with it.

The University of Toronto is the birthplace of insulin and stem cell research, and was the site of the first practical electron microscope, the development of multi-touch technology, the identification of the first black hole Cygnus X-1, and the development of the theory of NP-completeness. It is the member of the Association of American Universities, a consortium of the leading North American research universities. It is the only other member of the association outside of USA; the other university is the McGill University.
