A pioneering French chemist, Donnet was the driving force behind UHA’s founding. After earning his doctorate in physical chemistry in the early 1950s, he joined CNRS and later became director of the École Nationale Supérieure de Chimie de Mulhouse. In 1970, he helped create the academic center in Mulhouse, which officially became the University of Upper Alsace in 1975. As its first president (1977–1982), he shaped UHA’s early direction. His research on carbon blacks and surface chemistry earned him numerous top honors, including the Carl‑Dietrich‑Harries Medal (1985), the Charles Goodyear Medal (1998), and the Legion of Honor (2000).
