The University of Virginia (UVA) is a research-based public university situated in Charlottesville, Virginia, United States. It is a flagship university founded in 1819 by Thomas Jefferson. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is among the top universities of the United States.

The University of Virginia was established in 1819. In 1802, the then President of the United States, Thomas Jefferson and Charles Willson Peale together made the idea of establishing a university.

The Campus of the University of Virginia is commonly known as Grounds. The campus forms the border between Charlottesville and Albemarle County. The Architecture of the campus, Jeffesonian architecture, was praised as ‘incomparably the most ambitious and monumental architectural project of the century’ by The New York Times in 1895. The American Institutes of Architects called it the ‘proudest achievement of American architecture’. The Academical village along with the Jefferson house is a world heritage site. It is the first collegiate site in the UNESCO World heritage site. The Academical Village has a Lawn, a grand terraced green space surrounded by residential and academic buildings, the gardens, the range and the larger university surrounding it.

 The first and main library of the University of Virginia was the Rotunda. Thomas Jefferson himself was deeply engaged in selecting the material that made up the library’s original collection. Another library, Alderman Library, was opened in 1937. But today the university has many libraries and has over 5 million volumes. The library also has its online availability with over 72,000 books online with 350,000 images. The online text is open to everyone. Alderman library has the most extensive Tibetan collection in the world. Another library named Albert and Shirley Small Special Collections Library has a collection of American literature as well as two copies of the original printing of the Declaration of Independence. The Rare Book School of University of Virginia, a non-profit organization, has the history books and the history of printing that began at Columbia University in 1983.

STUDENT EVENTS

The University of Virginia hosts many events for their students; one of the largest events of the University is Springfest which is hosted by the University Programs Council. It features a large free concert and various games. Some other popular events are Foxfield, steeplechase and social gathering in Albemarle County in April. It is annually attended by thousands of students from the University and neighboring colleges. 

SECRET SOCIETIES

The secret societies of the University have been a part of the University of Virginia student life since the first class of students in 1825. There are more than 6 societies that are active over 100 years and there are several newer societies too. 

SPORTS AND FITNESS

The University of Virginia has been ranked near the top in its athletics programs in recent years. In 2015 and 2019, the university won the nationwide One Cup for overall men’s sports excellence. The university’s men’s basketball team won the NCAA Championship in 2019. The university also has many sporting facilities in baseball, tennis, basketball, swimming and diving etc. 

ACCOMMODATION

McCormick Road Dormitories (Old Dorms) and Alderman Road Dormitories (New Dorms) are the primary housing areas for first year students. There are three residential colleges at the university : Brown College, Hereford College and International Residential College. There is an application process to live there. The application process is extremely competitive, especially for the brown. Fourth year undergraduate students join ten members of the faculty who permanently live and teach in the pavilions.

University of Virginia, Scholarship 

The Jefferson Scholars Foundation of the university offers the students four year full tuition scholarships based on regional, international and at large competitions. Students are selected by their high school interviews and a series of tests of character, aptitude and general suitability. Approx 3% of those successfully got the scholarship.

1. Ann O’Brien Leone Scholarship

In 1998 Joseph Leone founded a memorial scholarship honoring the life of Ann O’Brien Leone.  The scholarship will be awarded to an undergraduate student enrolled in the University of Virginia who demonstrates the broad intellectual interests and qualities of leadership and citizenship envisioned by the University’s founder.  The recipient of the scholarship should share Ann’s love of the University and her passion for scientific research.

Eligibility Criteria/ Scholarship Guidelines

All Alumni scholarships are open to international students.

Preference will be given to a student engaged in a course of study that leads to a career in pharmacological research, but this is by no means a requirement.

Candidate should maintain a cumulative GPA of a least 3.0 and demonstrates a need for financial aid.

No separate application is required.

2. Candice M. Ruff Memorial Scholarship

THE CANDICE (Kandy) M. RUFF MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP was founded in 1997 to celebrate her life and honor her ideals.  Candice graduated in the Class of 1996, with a double major in psychology and Spanish. This scholarship is presented on a merit basis to a rising third- or a fourth-year student majoring in Spanish, religious studies or psychology.

Eligibility Criteria/ Scholarship Guidelines

All Alumni scholarships are open to international students.

Candidates must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

They must exhibit spiritual, mental and physical growth, and be able to articulate clear personal and career goals.  Most importantly, the student will determine Christian leadership, community service and contribution to the University.
