Established in 1957, University of Waterloo is a public research university with its main campus in Waterloo, Canada. The university has satellite campuses in Cambridge, Kitchener, and Stratford.  The University of Waterloo is most famous for its co-op (co-operative education) programs, which allow the students to integrate their education with applicable work experiences. It claims to operate the largest post-secondary co-operative education program in the world.

The university is organized into six faculties: Faculty of Applied Health Sciences; Faculty of Arts; Faculty of Engineering; Faculty of Environment; Faculty of Mathematics; and Faculty of Science. Each faculty comprises of various schools. The university is a member of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada. The university operates 41 research institutes and centres including the Institute for Quantum Computing, the Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing, Centre for Applied Cryptographic Research and the Waterloo Institute for Nanotechnology.

The total student population at the university is more than 36,000 students of which over 31,000 are enrolled in the undergraduate programs. The student to faculty ratio at the university is 26:1 and the acceptance rate is 53%.

The programs in Kinesiology, Knowledge Integration and Nanotechnology Engineering are some of the standout programs of University of Waterloo. All undergraduate programs in the Faculty of Engineering and some other programs in the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Mathematics require compulsory co-op placements as part of the five-year program. The Faculty of Engineering requires a minimum of five co-op placements (twenty months) while other programs require a minimum of four co-op placements (sixteen months). Some of the university students also engage in international co-op opportunities abroad.
