The University of Windsor traces its origins to 1857, when it was established as Assumption College, a Roman Catholic institution run by the Jesuits. It later came under the administration of the Basilian Fathers in 1870.
Initially focused on theological studies, the University of Windsor has grown into a comprehensive, non-denominational institution offering diverse programs in law, business, engineering, science, education, nursing, and more. The university experienced major expansion under Dr. J. Francis Leddy (1964–1977), increasing its student population and joining the International Association of Universities in 1964.
Assumption College gained independence from the University of Western Ontario in 1953 and was renamed Assumption University in 1954. It officially became the University of Windsor on July 1, 1963.
