In April 2024, Professor Rémy Magloire Dieudonné Etoua was appointed as the Rector of the University of Yaoundé I. A Ph.D. holder in Applied Mathematics from the University of Montreal, Professor Etoua brings extensive experience from previous roles, including Rector of the University of Bertoua and Director of the National Higher Polytechnic School of Yaoundé I.
In May 2023, the University of Yaoundé I secured the top position at the National University Games held in Ngaoundéré. The university's athletes earned a total of 37 medals: 17 gold, 10 silver, and 10 bronze, surpassing all other participating institutions.

A team from the university developed a novel floating amphiphilic biomass-based material through plasma processing. This material demonstrated enhanced capabilities in wastewater remediation, offering a sustainable solution for water purification.
Researchers synthesized new thermochromic isomorphous supramolecular materials based on 5,5′-indigodisulfonate ions. These materials exhibited color changes upon dehydration and rehydration processes, indicating potential applications in sensors and smart coatings.
