Youngstown State University Infrastructure & Services
Campus
Youngstown State University campus is located just north of downtown Youngstown on a 160-acre (0.65 km2) campus. Although it is not near any noteworthy geographical features, Youngstown State's campus is notable for its landscaping, which differs from that of many other urban universities. The geographical center of YSU has a park-like atmosphere, with hilly terrain and a variety of trees and plant life, as well as tables and chairs circling a campus fountain. Most campus buildings were built within the last half-century, making them newer than most downtown Youngstown buildings, which were built before the Great Depression.
Library
William F. Maag, Jr. Library is the name of Youngstown State University's library. The William F. Maag, Jr. Library, which opened in 1976, serves as the university's main library. Early Youngstown College students used a small library collection in Jones Hall as well as the public library on Wick Avenue. After much fundraising by students and community members, the University's first library (now Tod Hall) was built in 1953. By the 1970s, the library had outgrown its original structure, and plans for a new structure were underway. The new library was named after William Maag, a long-time trustee of the University and the public library. The library was designated as a Federal Depository for government documents in 1971. The Library of William F. Maag, Jr. Maag Library became a Federal Depository for government documents in 1971, just a few years before its doors opened. It is currently a six-story building with over 500,000 volumes in house and access to the collections of 84 other Ohio institutions through participation in the OhioLINK programme. The Writing Center and the English Language Institute are also housed in the building.
