Yukon University History

Yukon University is a public university based in Yukon, Canada. Yukon University traces its history to its founding year which is 1963 when the Whitehorse Vocational and Technical Training Centre located on the banks of the Yukon River in downtown Whitehorse was established. The Whitehorse Vocational and Technical training center was granted the college status in the year 1983, and then in 1988 the Whitehorse campus moved from downtown to its current location. In 2020, Yukon College was granted university status and all thirteen campuses were renamed Yukon University. The Yukon University today serves as a research hub and offers various degrees and courses through its campuses.

Yukon University Campus

Yukon University Campus, also referred to as Ayamdigut, is located 4 kilometers north of downtown Whitehorse, Yukon. The campus is spread across 97 hectares. The main campus has various administrative buildings, academic buildings, campus stores, recreational center, food and drinks area, campus housing and many others. The Yukon University also has various other small campuses in the territory. They are: Faro, Teslin, Watson Lake, Mayo, Ross River, Pelly Crossing, Carmacks, Haines Junction, Carcross, Old Crow, and Dawson city. 

Yukon University Library

Yukon University Library has a good collection of resources for students and the faculties. The services that are being provided by the Yukon University Library are: borrowing books, computer lab access, scanning and printing, online access to resources and research help, study room, interlibrary loans, online learning tools and many others. Yukon University Housing/ Accommodation services

On-Campus: Living on-campus always has its own perks as students can have access to all the facilities. It is always a thrilling experience to live in the campus amongst a diverse community of students. Yukon University has four student housing buildings on Ayamdigut Campus, providing 92 units for 108 students. Units come with basic furnishings and utilities such as water, electricity, heat, and garbage disposal, are included. The housing options are as follows:

Housing rates: The housing charges vary from one building to another. The charges range from $2000 to $5800 per term.

Off-Campus: There is not any information provided on the University website regarding this. However, students can look for rented apartments nearby through a trusted agency.

Yukon University Medical Services

Yukon University do not have any medical services on the campus. The University instead only has counseling services for the students. They have trained professionals to look after the students. There are also various apps that can be downloaded on phones that support mental health.

The following documents are required:

  • An official evaluated transcript to confirm the program admission requirements
  • An English language proficiency score that meets the requirements.

If you are applying for a program that requires math (Aviation Management, Business Administration, Science programs, Office Administration, and Culinary Arts), your transcripts need to be evaluated by one of the following agencies:

  • IELTS 6.0 (in Academic Testing. No lower than 6.0 in each section) or

  • Duolingo 110 overall and minimum scores for each section are: Literacy 110, Comprehension 115, Conversation 100, Production 95

Diploma and Certificate programs

  • IELTS 6.0 (in Academic Testing. No lower than 5.5 in each section) or

  • PTE Academic 46 (no lower than 36 in each section)
  • Duolingo 110 overall and minimum scores for each section are: Literacy 110, Comprehension 115, Conversation 100, Production 95
  • Students applying under SDS (Student Direct Stream) program must have an IELTS score of 6.0 with no lower than 6.0 in each section to meet the requirement for the program.

Culinary Arts, Office Administration and Trades programs

  • iBT TOEFL – 45
  • PTE Academic 29 (no lower than 29 in each section)
  • Duolingo 85 with all sub-scores being in a minimum of the 75th percentile
