Established in 2001 (operations began in autumn with first cohort arriving in 2001), the university was initially founded in 1999 in partnership with the University of Bremen, Rice University, and the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen. It operated as International University Bremen before being renamed Jacobs University Bremen in 2007.

Step-by-Step Guide to Admission Requirements at Jacobs University

Basic Eligibility

Applicants must hold a valid university entrance qualification—i.e. high school diploma recognized by their country (e.g., Abitur, A-levels, IB) or equivalent national qualifications. Alternative eligibility includes test scores like SAT or ACT ≥ 190 points Test?AS in lieu of the German entrance exam requirement  .

German language proficiency is not required; instead, proof of English proficiency is mandatory.

    Developed and led by Professor Peter Baumann, rasdaman is a pioneering big‑data analytics database system enabling efficient storage and querying of large multi-dimensional arrays (e.g., satellite imagery, scientific grids).
