Established in 2001 (operations began in autumn with first cohort arriving in 2001), the university was initially founded in 1999 in partnership with the University of Bremen, Rice University, and the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen. It operated as International University Bremen before being renamed Jacobs University Bremen in 2007.

The university provides on‑campus accommodation for up to approximately 1,250 students, offering three tiered options:

Single apartments (~€7,000/year)

Single rooms with shared bathroom (~€6,000/year)

Double rooms shared bathroom (~€3,500/year) .

Residences are organized into four residential colleges, each governed by clear house rules ensuring safety, mutual respect, and resource protection  . Resident mentors and housing staff are available to assist with housing-related issues, room repairs, and facility support  .
