AUTH was officially established in 1925 by the Alexandros Papanastassiou government to promote economic and cultural growth in northern Greece. It began operating in 1926, becoming the second university in Greece after the University of Athens.
AUTH is the largest university in Greece, with over 100,000 students and a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs. It is a major center for education and research in fields including science, technology, engineering, humanities, and health sciences.
Initially, AUTH included the Faculties of Philosophy, Physics & Mathematics, and Theology. Over the decades, it expanded significantly, adding major faculties like Veterinary Medicine (1950), Engineering (1955), and Dentistry (1959), becoming a comprehensive university.
