Bangor University has a large campus in Bangor, as well as a portion of the School of Healthcare Sciences near Wrexham. The university was founded in a historic coaching inn, the Penrhyn Arms Hotel, which housed the university's 58 students and 12 faculty members. It relocated to a much larger new structure in 1911, which is currently the historic Main Arts Building. In 1969, a new expansion on the College Road side of the building formed a quadrangle. The Main Arts Building is presently known as such. Pontio, the university's arts and innovation centre, first opened its doors in 2016. The structure houses the student union's headquarters as well as instructional and social rooms.
