Birmingham-Southern College was formed by the merger of Southern University, founded in Greensboro, Alabama, in 1856, and Birmingham College, founded in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1898. On May 30, 1918, these two institutions merged.

Police provide students with safety on the Birmingham-Southern College campus. Three hundred sixty-five days a year, 24-hour security is provided. Officers from Campus Police patrol the campus on foot, on bicycles, and in vehicles. Campus lighting is intended to illuminate all significant areas of campus 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Weekly inspections of fire systems are performed in all living facilities. Birmingham is one of Alabama's most dangerous cities, with a crime rate that is 112 percent higher than the national average. In 2018, aggravated assaults accounted for nearly 70% of all violent crimes reported.
