In 1974, Caldwell University became the first institution in New Jersey to award its students the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. In 1979, it became one of the few institutions in the state to offer a unique external degree program. In 2020, Caldwell University was awarded two research grants from the National Science Foundation. In 2000, Caldwell became the first higher education institution in New Jersey to specialize in art therapy. The first post-graduate M.A. in art therapy was added in 2008. Caldwell University's infrastructure includes a residential community with three on-campus buildings housing approximately 600 students, a wheelchair-accessible entrance and parking lot for improved accessibility, and a robust information technology infrastructure that was significantly upgraded following the challenges posed by Hurricane Sandy.
Caldwell University offers a vibrant student life with on-campus living options, including single, double, and quad rooms, as well as apartment-style suites in Dominican Hall with kitchens and wireless internet. The university boasts over 40 clubs and organizations, ranging from spiritual and community service clubs to fraternities and sororities. Additionally, students can engage in volunteer opportunities through Campus Ministry, such as feeding the homeless, rebuilding homes, and assisting at a soup kitchen.
