Charles University History

The Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV inspired the establishment of a mediaeval university in Prague. The Charles University was founded in 1349. The university was divided into four nations: Bohemian, Bavarian, Polish, and Saxon.

Charles University infrastructure & services

Charles University Campuses

Charles University does not have a single shared campus. The academic facilities are spread throughout Prague, and three of the faculties are located in other cities (two in Hradec Králové and one in Plze). Carolinum, a historical main building from the 14th century, is located in Prague's Old Town and serves as the university's centre. It houses the rector as well as the Academic Senate of Charles University. Carolinum also serves as a location for official academic ceremonies such as matriculations and graduations. Also Karolinum Press is its academic publishing house, and the university also operates several museums. The Botanical Garden of Charles University is located in the New Town and is maintained by the Faculty of Science.

Charles University Libraries

  Central Library is the name of Charles University's library. Management, Tourism, Finance, Librarianship, Public Policy, Marketing, Hospitality, Environment, Criminology, Gender Studies, Arts, Discrimination, Humanities, and other disciplines are covered by the Charles University Library. This extensive book collection is available in the Evidence-Based Acquisition (EBA) mode, which means that users can browse the entire book collection on the Emerald platform before selecting the most popular titles for permanent purchase based on statistics. Charles University students and faculty have access to a wide range of electronic information resources (e-resources for short). Most e-resources can be accessed remotely in addition to on-site access from computers on the UK network.

Charles University Housing services

  Various residential halls and dormitories at Charles University provide housing services. The Charles University arranges for incoming students to stay in Halls of Residence. The application for a room in one of the CU residence halls must be submitted through the Erasmus online registration system. Students live in double rooms. Single rooms are rarely available. Only students with relevant health issues or special needs may be granted an exception. If you are a member of one of these groups, please contact us at [email protected].

 A medical certificate sent to the specified e-mail address must confirm the health issues and special needs. If there is enough capacity, Ph.D. students may be eligible for single rooms as well.

Charles University Medical services

  The students' health centre at Charles University provides medical services. During their stay in the Czech Republic, all insured incoming students (including EHIC cardholders) have access to urgent, state-provided healthcare. You must register your EHIC blue card with one of the Czech health insurance providers in order to receive relevant medical treatment. Non-prescription drugs and medicines are only available in pharmacies in the Czech Republic. They are not sold in supermarkets, as they are in many Western European countries. The prominent green cross displayed over the shopfront distinguishes pharmacies.

Charles University student support

 Charles University is constantly improving its facilities for disabled students. The Office for Students with Special Needs (part of the IAC of CU) provides students with the opportunity to discuss their needs and requirements, as well as ongoing support throughout their time at Charles University. There are currently 120 students with visual and hearing impairments, mobility issues, and other disabilities enrolled. Mail [email protected]  is the email address for the Office. The office works with other specialized centres both inside and outside of the university.

Charles University visas & immigration support

  If you are coming to study at a Charles University's Faculty from a visa-required country (a list of these countries can be found on the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs' website), you must go through the visa approval process. You can apply for a short-term and long-term visa, as well as a long-term residence permit, depending on your purpose of travel and future plans. If the accommodation provider (e.g., student's residence hall, hostel, hotel, etc.) has not done so, all non-EU (and non-EEA) students are legally required to register with the Foreign Police within three days of their arrival. To complete the visa approval process, you can visit the Ministry of Interior's Department for Asylum and Migration in Prague. The new MOI office is designed for students who need a visa to enter the Czech Republic.

Charles University sports and fitness

    Hostiva Sports Centre provides Charles University with sports and fitness facilities. The Hostiva Sports Centre is located on Bruslaská St., not far from the Hostiva Halls of Residence, and spans nearly seven hectares. It has an indoor pool, a multipurpose hall for indoor sports, a gym, a sauna, outdoor pitches, ten tennis courts, football pitches, and softball parks, and a multipurpose inflatable sports hall. The Hostiva Sports Centre is a popular venue for the University's many sports clubs and is used for physical education teaching.

Charles University Part time jobs

   Many students work and study simultaneously. Working part-time or during the summer is very common in the Czech Republic. International students can also work; however, be aware that job opportunities may be limited because most jobs require fluency in Czech. However, many international companies operate in major cities, and your ability to speak or understand multiple languages may be advantageous. Full-time (40-hour-per-week) minimum gross salary: 13 350 CZK per month equates to 79, 80 CZK per hour
