Federal Center for Technological Education Celso Suckow da Fonseca (CEFET/RJ) stands out for its strong integration of technical education, higher education, research, innovation and industry-oriented training within a single federal institution. Its programmes are closely connected to science, engineering and technology, while its mission emphasises developing professionals capable of contributing to Brazil’s scientific, technological, cultural and economic development.
A major USP is its emphasis on applied research and technological innovation. CEFET/RJ operates a dedicated Technological Innovation Centre (CONIT) for intellectual-property protection and technology transfer, while its Research and Innovation Centres connect academic research with the needs of industry and society. The institution also offers education across multiple levels—from technical secondary education to undergraduate and postgraduate study—creating a distinctive vertical and multidisciplinary learning pathway. Its eight-campus network across Rio de Janeiro state further broadens access to technological education and regional development.

Federal Center for Technological Education Celso Suckow da Fonseca (CEFET/RJ) has a multicampus infrastructure comprising eight campuses: Maracanã, Angra dos Reis, Itaguaí, Maria da Graça, Nova Friburgo, Nova Iguaçu, Petrópolis and Valença. Together, these campuses provide classrooms, laboratories, workshops, libraries, auditoriums, research spaces and student facilities. The institution's 2025–2029 infrastructure plan reports approximately 166,874 m² of total land area and 71,983 m² of built area across the campuses.
The Maracanã campus, the main academic and administrative centre, has extensive facilities including 72 classrooms, 166 laboratories and workshops, nine auditoriums, a library, two video libraries and a sports complex with courts, gymnasium, swimming pool and athletics track. It also has restaurants, cafeterias, a medical-dental unit, a teaching-resource centre and other student services.
Other campuses are equipped according to their academic needs. For example, Itaguaí has 22 laboratories, an auditorium, library and multipurpose sports court, while Nova Friburgo has 15 laboratories, research and workshop spaces, a library and auditorium. Angra dos Reis provides 15 laboratory rooms, an auditorium, multipurpose sports court, parking and green area.
Federal Center for Technological Education Celso Suckow da Fonseca (CEFET/RJ) offers an active student life that combines academics with sports, cultural activities, entrepreneurship, research and community engagement. Students can participate in sports such as volleyball, basketball, indoor football, handball, jiu-jitsu and capoeira, while campus facilities such as the Maracanã sports complex provide courts, a gymnasium, swimming pool and athletics track.
Student life also includes academic events, science and technology fairs, extension projects, student organisations and entrepreneurship initiatives. At campuses such as Angra dos Reis, student-led athletic associations organise sports, cultural and social activities that encourage teamwork, leadership and interaction with the wider community. CEFET/RJ also supports initiatives such as Cefet Jr. Consultoria and ENACTUS, giving students opportunities to develop practical and entrepreneurial skills.
The institution places emphasis on student wellbeing and inclusion through counselling, pedagogical guidance, health and wellbeing initiatives, accessibility programmes and financial assistance. In 2026, its Student Assistance Programme continued supporting eligible students facing social or economic vulnerability, while campus pedagogical teams provided academic, psychological and social support. Students at the Maracanã campus also have access to a student restaurant offering affordable meals, with free meals and snacks available to eligible students under the assistance programme.

Federal Center for Technological Education Celso Suckow da Fonseca (CEFET/RJ) emphasizes industry engagement, internships, applied projects and professional integration rather than a traditional centralized campus-placement model. The institution operates a dedicated Division of Business Integration (DIEMP) and a Directorate of Extension (DIREX) that facilitate internships, industry interactions and professional development opportunities for students.
Students gain practical experience through mandatory and non-mandatory internships, research scholarships, extension projects and collaborations with public and private organizations. CEFET/RJ regularly publishes internship opportunities and selection processes across its campuses, helping students develop workplace skills and industry exposure before graduation.
The institution's strong focus on engineering, technology, industrial processes, information technology, telecommunications and applied sciences enables students to work closely with companies through internships, research partnerships and innovation projects. Its institutional planning documents also highlight interaction with public and private enterprises to align education with regional and national development needs.
The below information is required while
completing the university application :
1. For undergraduate programmes, CEFET/RJ normally admits students through SISU (Sistema de Seleção Unificada), using the ENEM examination as the selection stage.
2. The 2026 undergraduate selection notice confirms that CEFET/RJ used a single SISU 2026 selection process for vacancies in both semesters.
3. For an international qualification, applicants should be prepared to provide officially authenticated/legalised educational documents and an appropriate Portuguese translation, where required, so that the qualification can be accepted as equivalent to Brazilian secondary education.
4. International students should also arrange the appropriate passport/residence documentation and Brazilian CPF, as required for enrolment.
5. It is important to note that CEFET/RJ does not appear to operate a separate general undergraduate admission route specifically for foreign students; the regular undergraduate route is tied to SISU/ENEM.
6. Therefore, international applicants should carefully check the current CEFET/RJ and SISU notice to determine whether they are eligible for the particular admission cycle and how a foreign secondary school qualification can be used.
