The Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), founded in 1927 as the University of Minas Gerais (UMG), is the oldest university in the state and has a rich history rooted in earlier educational institutions. Its origins include the School of Pharmacy (1839), the Ouro Preto Faculty of Law (1898), and the Free School of Dentistry (1907).

UFMG was officially established in 1927 as the University of Minas Gerais (UMG) through the merger of four schools: Law, Dentistry, Medicine, and Engineering.
Some of the earliest schools include the School of Pharmacy (1839), the Ouro Preto Faculty of Law (1898), the Free School of Dentistry (1907), and the Faculties of Medicine and Engineering (1911).
In 1949, funding for UMG was transferred from the state to the Brazilian government, making it a federal institution. The name was officially changed to UFMG in 1965.
