What does "University of Applied Sciences" mean?

A University of Applied Sciences (UAS) focuses on profession-oriented higher education. The curriculum at Hanze UAS emphasizes practical skills, real-world projects, and internships, preparing students directly for specific careers, in contrast to research-oriented universities which are more theoretically focused.

What are the English language requirements for Bachelor's programmes?

For most Bachelor's programmes, you need an English language test score equivalent to IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL iBT 80. Some programmes may have higher requirements, so it is essential to check the specific programme page on the official website for precise details.

How does the selection procedure for a numerus fixus (limited enrolment) programme work?

For programmes with a limited number of spots, such as some in Engineering or Arts, Hanze UAS uses a decentralised selection procedure. This means that eligible applicants are not selected on a first-come, first-served basis but are assessed based on their motivation, previous grades, and/or test results to ensure the most suitable candidates are admitted.

What documents do I need to submit for my application?

Typically, you will need to provide a copy of your passport, a certified copy of your secondary school diploma and transcripts (with an official translation if necessary), your CV, a motivation letter, and proof of your English language proficiency. Always check the programme-specific requirements in the online application portal (Osiris).

How safe is the city of Groningen for students?

Groningen is consistently ranked as one of the safest cities in the Netherlands. The city centre is lively but generally very safe, even at night. The university advises common sense, such as locking your bike and being aware of your surroundings, but serious crime is rare.

What security measures are in place on campus?

The Zernike Campus has 24/7 security personnel, emergency phones, and extensive CCTV coverage. Security staff patrol the buildings and grounds regularly. All students have access to a central emergency number to report any incidents or concerns immediately.

What support is available if I feel unsafe or experience harassment?

Hanze UAS has a confidential advisor for unacceptable behaviour whom you can contact for support and advice. This service is completely confidential and can guide you on the steps to take, whether it involves filing a formal report or accessing psychological support.

Can I take classes from different programmes or faculties?

While your core curriculum is fixed to your chosen programme, there are often opportunities for interdisciplinary projects and electives. Some schools offer optional minors where you can delve into a different subject area for one semester, allowing you to broaden your knowledge.

How much of the teaching is practical versus theoretical?

The education at Hanze UAS is heavily practice-oriented. A significant portion of your time will be spent on project work, group assignments, lab sessions, and cases provided by companies. Theory is taught to directly support and enable these practical applications.

Is an internship a mandatory part of the study programme?

Yes, almost all Bachelor's programmes at Hanze UAS include a mandatory internship (also called a placement) in the third or fourth year. This is a core component of the curriculum, giving you valuable work experience and helping you build a professional network.

What scholarships are available for international students?

Hanze UAS offers the Hanze Scholarship for excellent international students from outside the EU/EEA, which covers a portion of the tuition fees. The Dutch government also offers the Holland Scholarship. It is crucial to check the university's website early as deadlines and criteria are strict.

Am I eligible for Dutch student finance (DUO)?

Generally, students from EU/EEA countries who work at least 56 hours per month in the Netherlands may be eligible for a loan from DUO. Most non-EU students are not eligible for Dutch government finance and must rely on scholarships, personal funds, or loans from their home country.

Can I work part-time to support my studies?

Yes, international students from outside the EU/EEA are permitted to work a maximum of 16 hours per week during the semester, or full-time during the summer months (June, July, August). Your employer must obtain a work permit for you. EU/EEA students have no work restrictions.

Does the university guarantee housing for international students?

Hanze UAS does not guarantee housing but provides substantial support. The Housing Office reserves a number of rooms specifically for international students, which are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis via the online portal. It is highly recommended to apply as soon as the application opens.

What is the average cost of a room in Groningen?

The average cost for a furnished room in Groningen ranges from approximately €400 to €600 per month, excluding utilities. Prices vary based on location, size, and facilities. Rooms reserved through the university are typically in this range.

How do I commute to the Zernike Campus?

The vast majority of students cycle to the campus, as it is the fastest and most convenient mode of transport. Groningen is a cycling paradise with dedicated paths. There are also frequent buses connecting the city centre to the Zernike Campus, which take about 15-20 minutes.

What are my options to stay in the Netherlands after graduation?

Non-EU/EEA graduates can apply for the Orientation Year Visa (Zoekjaar in Dutch). This residence permit allows you to stay in the Netherlands for one full year to search for a job or start a business without needing a work sponsor immediately.

What are the conditions for the Orientation Year Visa?

To be eligible, you must have successfully completed a Bachelor's or Master's degree at a recognized Dutch educational institution like Hanze UAS. You must apply to the Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND) within three years of graduation.

Can I switch to a work permit after the Orientation Year?

Yes, the purpose of the Orientation Year is to find a qualified job. Once you find an employer, they can apply for a highly skilled migrant visa or a regular work permit for you. Having graduated from a Dutch university makes you an attractive candidate for employers navigating this process.
