What is the academic calendar at HOGENT?

The academic year starts in the third week of September and consists of two semesters of 12 weeks each, with the autumn semester ending in January and the spring semester ending later in the year, while week 13 is used for postponed classes and supervising activities.

Does HOGENT offer Dutch language courses for international students?

Yes, since the official language of instruction at HOGENT is Dutch, the university offers Dutch language courses for international students, and exchange students planning to study at HOGENT are encouraged to take these preparatory courses.

What is the difference between an exchange student and a degree student at HOGENT?

An exchange student temporarily studies at HOGENT for one semester or academic year but stays enrolled at their home institution and transfers credits back, whereas a degree student enrols at HOGENT as a regular student in order to obtain a full degree or diploma.

How can I apply for a master's programme at HOGENT?

For master's programmes, particularly in visual arts, audiovisual arts or drama, you need to have an academic bachelor in performing or creative arts, and admission is based on a portfolio, a master proposal, and an interview with the Orientation Committee.

Where are HOGENT's campuses located and how do I find accommodation?

HOGENT has 8 campuses in Ghent and 1 campus in Aalst, and Ghent is a popular student city where finding a room may prove hard if you start too late, so the university advises students to begin their search at least three months before arriving.

What are the housing options and costs for students at HOGENT?

HOGENT offers student residences such as Mercator D (38 single rooms) and Eddies Vesalius (37 single rooms) with rooms of 12m², fully furnished with a bed, desk, wardrobe, fridge and bookshelves, and the rental price for the academic year 2026-2027 is €2,420 per semester including utilities, with a €400 deposit required.

What do I need to do regarding visa and immigration before coming to HOGENT?

Incoming students from non-EU countries need to have an official student visa and apply for a residence permit upon arrival, and HOGENT strongly advises these students to start preparing their mobility one year in advance, while it is the responsibility of each student to obtain the student visa in a timely manner.

Do I need to register with the city of Ghent upon arrival?

Yes, all foreign students staying in Ghent have to report to the Foreigners Registration Office of the city as soon as possible after arrival, either via the eform or in person, and every person without Belgian nationality who is coming to Belgium to study must have a student residence permit.
