Established in 1937 as the Government Trade School—the city’s first publicly funded post-secondary technical institution—it evolved through several stages: becoming the Hong Kong Technical College in 1947.

Local undergraduate students in UGC-funded programs are generally guaranteed at least one semester of hall residence. Non-local undergraduates are usually offered accommodation for their first two years, subject to availability. Inbound exchange students are typically guaranteed accommodation for the duration of their exchange. Full-time research postgraduate students may be eligible for one year of hall residence, subject to availability.
The typical cost for one semester in a double room is around HK$6,678, which includes a refundable caution fee and a hall function fee. If halls are full, eligible students may be assigned to university-managed off-campus housing and may be offered a place in the Student Halls later if space becomes available.
PolyU's Student Halls primarily offer double-occupancy en-suite rooms, with shared bathrooms among groups of four. Facilities include: Laundry rooms Common areas Study rooms Recreational spaces Dining options Some halls also offer residential education and support services, including counseling and tutoring.
