The university was originally founded in 1966 as the "University of Social and Economic Sciences." In 1975, it was renamed Johannes Kepler University Linz to honor the astronomer Johannes Kepler, who lived and worked in Linz in the early 1600s.
JKU has several key research and innovation hubs, including the Research Institute for Symbolic Computing (RISC) (founded in 1987), the Linz Institute of Technology (LIT) (opened in 2015), and the Kurt Rothschild School of Economics and Statistics (established in 2021). These institutions contribute to JKU’s strong emphasis on scientific and technological advancements.
The Faculty of Medicine was established in 2012, marking an important expansion of JKU’s academic offerings. Later, in 2021, the JKU MED Campus was opened to further support medical education and research.
