Kalashnikov Izhevsk State Technical University (often abbreviated as ISTU) is a public technical university located in Izhevsk, in the Udmurt Republic, Russia.  It was founded in 1952. On 22 February 2012 the university was named after Mikhail Kalashnikov, the famous small-arms designer.

Student Support

ISTU provides health-services via its on-campus polyclinic and health centre, supporting students and staff.  For safety and welfare, there is a dedicated Department of Complex Safety which manages access control, pass-entry systems, video-surveillance in buildings and hostels, and orientation sessions for international students.  Students also have access to computer labs, snack areas, hostels with study rooms, and an electronic library network for academic support.

Student Life

Life at ISTU includes more than academics; the palace “Integral” houses a student theatre, rock-club, jazz band, and hosts cultural and entertainment events such as discos, intellectual games and faculty parties.  A sports centre on the bank of the Kama River offers recreational housing, sports fields and a sauna for off-campus relaxation.  The campus environment mixes technical education with social, cultural and outdoor engagement for students.

Housing facilities (Accommodation)

The university offers dormitory accommodation for students, especially international students. For example, one source states: “Students live in comfortable hostels with cooking and laundry facilities… international students are mainly accommodated in hostel 6.”  Another source estimates costs at approximately 1300-1600 RUB/month (for some dorms) depending on conditions.

Student Safety

ISTU has a dedicated Department of Complex Safety that oversees campus security. They conduct safety briefings for international students, maintain a pass‐entry system, campus security squad “Rys” (“Lynx”), and police supervision of the campus. All buildings are equipped with fire alarm systems, smoke ventilation, video-surveillance and automatic controls.
