When Professor Janet Hemingway (opens in a new tab) took over as LSTM's director in 2001, she led a time of significant investment and growth. As a result, the school received accreditation as a higher education institution in 2013 and the authority to offer degrees in 2017. Since his appointment in 2019, our current director, Professor David Lalloo (opens in a new tab), has been in charge of the school's ongoing growth and development. During this time, the COVID-19 pandemic occurred, and LSTM's experience was put to use in vaccine trials, therapies, diagnostics, and raising money for medical personnel abroad. In 2022, the Office for Students named LSTM one of 21 world-leading specialty providers, and we were placed second in the UK for the effect of our research in the Research Excellence Framework (REF 2021). For our life-saving Tsetse-control program, Tiny Targets, we were also awarded the Queen's Anniversary Prize (opens in a new tab), the highest national honor for higher education in the United Kingdom, in 2023.
The Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) has its main campus at Pembroke Place, Liverpool, L3 5QA, and also operates Well Travelled Clinics in Liverpool and Chester for travel-related health services. The institution is a public university and a research institute focused on tropical diseases.
There are around 279 students in the university.
