LIU was founded by the New York State Education Department in 1926 and opened its first campus in Brooklyn. The LIU Post campus is named after breakfast cereal inventor Charles William Post, who sold the site (Marjorie Merriweather Post's Long Island house, Hillwood) to LIU in 1951 for $200,000 ($2,087,949 today).
