MedUni Vienna traces its origins to 1365, when it was established as the Medical Faculty of the University of Vienna. It became an independent university in 2004.
The Josephinum, built in 1785, is a historic medical institution housing a museum of anatomical wax models, one of the largest in Europe. It reflects MedUni Vienna’s long-standing contributions to medical education and research.
During her reign, Maria Theresia helped elevate Viennese medicine to international prominence by bringing Gerard van Swieten, a Dutch physician, to Vienna. He laid the foundation for the Vienna Medical School, which became a global leader in medical education.
