Mid Sweden University was founded on 1 July 1993 as a result of the merger of the University College of Sundsvall/Härnösand and the University College of Östersund. It was granted full university status from 1 January 2005 and thus became Mid Sweden University.

Student life at Mid Sweden University is active and varied. At the Sundsvall campus, students benefit from a campus location just a short walk from the city centre, with facilities such as outdoor volleyball and basketball courts, a student pub and common areas in the Student Union House.  At the Östersund campus, the proximity to nature and winter-sports facilities gives students access to skiing, trekking, fishing and other outdoor activities year-round.  The student unions organise welcome weeks, social events, parties, trips and student-association activities, promoting both social life and academic support.

While Mid Sweden University does not directly provide its own student dormitories under its ownership, it collaborates closely with local student-housing companies in each host city (Sundsvall and Östersund).  Student accommodation options include dormitory rooms, shared apartments, single apartments, and cottage apartments, provided via external housing providers.  For visiting researchers and doctoral students there are also on-campus or near-campus furnished studio apartments administered via the university’s housing office.  The typical monthly rent in the region for student housing is reported in one source to range between approximately SEK 2,000-4,000 depending on type.
