The primary MIPT campus is situated in the Moscow district of Dolgoprudny in the north. However, Zhukovsky, a suburb southeast of Moscow, is home to the Aeromechanics Department. Phystech is widely referred to as the "MIT of Russia" and is regarded as the top specialized technical university in the former Soviet Union because its founder, Pyotr Kapitsa, created the institution based on the Massachusetts Institute of Technology model.

A completed application form, a high school diploma with a notarized Russian translation and legalization, a passport and visa, evidence of English proficiency (such as a B2 or equivalent), and possibly results from academic competitions are required for international undergraduate students applying to the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT).
