Student Support

Munich University of Applied Sciences (HM) provides a broad range of academic, personal, financial, career, wellbeing, and international-student support services. Its Central Student Advice Centre assists students with study planning, academic and organisational questions, financing and scholarships, disability or chronic-illness support, family responsibilities, and difficult personal situations. Students can also access course-specific academic advising and peer-based support.

For learning and wellbeing, HM's studyFIT initiative provides resources and guidance focused on effective learning, health, wellbeing, and academic success. The university also offers MHFA Peer Coaching, where trained student peer coaches provide a confidential first point of contact for students experiencing difficult periods or simply needing someone to talk to.

International students receive dedicated assistance through the Student Advice Centre and International Office, including guidance on studying at HM, accommodation, scholarships, language workshops, and international mobility. HM also operates HoMe – University Mentoring, a mentoring programme designed specifically for international first-year students to help them settle into university life.

Student Life

Student life at Munich University of Applied Sciences (HM) combines academic study with sports, cultural activities, student organizations, international events, entrepreneurship, and social engagement. Students can participate in the International Club, which organizes weekly get-togethers, affordable social events, hiking, weekend trips, cultural excursions, game and karaoke nights, and activities such as rafting and bouldering.

HM also offers a wide range of university sports, including team sports, climbing, fitness, dance, yoga, and other recreational activities. Students can take advantage of Munich's wider leisure opportunities, including parks, the Isar River, museums, festivals, Christmas markets, and outdoor activities in the nearby Alps.

International students are an important part of campus life. HM provides orientation programmes, mentoring, intercultural activities, summer schools, and Internationalisation@Home initiatives, allowing students to interact with peers from different countries without necessarily studying abroad. The university also has more than 290 partner universities in over 60 countries, supporting a diverse international environment.

Housing facilities (Accommodation)

Munich University of Applied Sciences (HM) does not operate its own student residences, but it supports students in finding accommodation through the Studierendenwerk München Oberbayern and other housing providers. The Studierendenwerk operates more than 9,000 rooms and apartments for students in Munich, Freising, and Rosenheim, with an average monthly rent of around €400.60 for an individual accommodation unit. However, demand is high and waiting periods can range from one to seven semesters, depending on the residence.

Students can choose from student halls, shared apartments (WGs), privately operated residences, and private apartments. HM estimates typical monthly costs at around €700 for a room in a shared flat, €400–€600 for a privately operated student residence, and €700–€1,000 for a private single apartment.

For international exchange students, HM receives a limited number of service-package rooms from the Studierendenwerk. Only around 30–50% of incoming exchange students may receive a room because of limited availability. International degree-seeking students planning to study at HM for more than three years can apply directly to the Studierendenwerk under its eligibility rules.

Student Safety

Munich University of Applied Sciences (HM) maintains a structured approach to student safety, emergency response, health and wellbeing, and crisis support across its Lothstraße, Karlstraße, and Pasing campuses. The university has a Health and Safety Office responsible for accident prevention, occupational safety, fire safety, and related risk-management measures.

For emergencies, HM provides students with clear access to police and emergency services. The university's crisis guidance advises calling 110 for police emergencies, including serious threats, accidents involving criminal situations, or immediate danger. Campus-specific police contacts are also available for the Lothstraße, Karlstraße, and Pasing campuses.

HM also supports students experiencing psychological or personal crises. Students can access the Central Student Advice Centre, counselling for difficult life situations, and external psychosocial and psychotherapeutic counselling services. HM also provides information on crisis contacts for acute situations.
