For an internship to count for academic credit (worth 3 course credits), a student must complete a minimum of 120 hours over a 10–12 week period (or 15 weeks if the internship takes place during the semester). Internships may be paid or unpaid opportunities.

While still enrolled, international students on F‑1 visas may apply for Curricular Practical Training (CPT) to participate in internships or co‑ops that are directly related to their academic program. CPT authorization requires registration through Handshake and submission of a SEVIS registration form, after which a new I‑20 with CPT information is issued.
