Northeastern Illinois, which was established in 1867, takes pride in its long history of educational innovation and in producing administrators and instructors who have an impact on Chicago. This custom is still followed today and has grown to encompass a wide range of academic fields, enabling the university to completely integrate into the community in which it is located. Northeastern has been named a Hispanic-Serving Institution by the U.S. Department of Education and is considered the most diverse public comprehensive university in the Midwest. Diversity plays a significant role in Northeastern's personality and the social cohesion of its student body. Over 5,000 students are enrolled at the university; approximately 67% of the student body is made up of African American, Hispanic, Asian, and Native American students. The University provides more than 40 undergraduate degree and certificate programs in addition to more than 50 graduate degree, certificate, licensing, and endorsement programs. The Main Campus is situated on 67 acres in a desirable residential neighborhood on Chicago's Northwest Side.
