Infrastructure & Facilities at OST University of Applied Sciences of Eastern Switzerland

OST operates three campuses and engages in teaching, research, and advisory operations. Here you will find an overview of the OST Campuses in St. Gallen, Rapperswil-Jona and Buchs. Each campus page has more specific details about sports programs, opening hours, infrastructure, and much more. OST Buchs Campus is built on the premises of the old NTB Interstate University of Applied Sciences Buchs. On September 1, 2020, the universities of applied sciences FHS St. Gallen, HSR Rapperswil and NTB Buchs merged their strengths to become the Eastern Switzerland University of Applied Sciences (OST). About 2,200 students, instructors, and employees of the Eastern Switzerland University of Applied Sciences have access to the Rapperswil-Jona Campus for work, study, and research. St. Gallen is a center for education with a reputation that goes well beyond its boundaries. This national and international network is advantageous to the St. Gallen Campus. At the St. Gallen Campus, around 1700 students complete degree programs each year, and almost the same number complete executive education courses.

Notable Innovation, Research & Development OST University of Applied Sciences of Eastern Switzerland

Founded in 2020 as a result of the merging of HSR Rapperswil, NTB Buchs, and FHS St. Gallen, the OST, or Eastern Switzerland University of Applied Sciences, focuses on useful, industry-standard research. Notable inventions and advances, particularly from its specialized institutes, include:
HydroCab PowerCore: An integrated electrolyzer and fuel cell system with an electrical output of 8 kW and a capacity of up to 2 Nm³/h for the production of green hydrogen.
Energy-Harvesting Angle Encoders: Developed by the IMES Institute, these microgenerators power sensors by exploiting passing magnets, removing the need for external power sources.

Acoustic Levitation System: IMES developed a demonstrator that uses standing ultrasonic waves between two speaker arrays to control levitating particles.
FPGA-based High-Speed ADC: This field-programmable gate array-based analog-to-digital converter offers more flexibility for industrial use by doing away with the need for external components.
PCB-Based Rotary Encoder: An affordable position tracking sensor made with PCB coils.

    Notable Innovation

    01.
    International power-to-gas and power-to-X projects

A team of 17 specialists from the IET Institute of Energy Technology at OST Ostschweizer Fachhochschule is leading national and international power-to-gas and power-to-X projects. The development of methods that transform excess renewable electricity into storable energy sources like hydrogen (power-to-hydrogen), synthetic natural gas (power-to-methane), or liquid fuels (power-to-liquid) like methanol is the main focus. Power-to-X technology can be used to generate renewable, energy-based fuels (e-fuels), such as for the aviation or shipping industries, or to store electricity on a seasonal basis. In this way, the team contributes significantly to the energy transition and promotes the creation of sustainable energy systems.

    Year
    02.
    Energy harvesting for angle encoders

The microgenerators in the energy-autonomous encoders of Baumer Electric emit a voltage pulse when magnets pass, waking up the ASIC EARC developed by IMES. After reading the current angular position from a FRAM and modifying it based on the pulse polarity, the ASIC writes the updated position back into the FRAM before going back to sleep.

    Year
    03.
    Acoustic Levitation System

At IMES, a demonstrator for acoustic levitation and particle control has been created. By creating standing ultrasonic waves between two speaker arrays, levitation has been accomplished. In order to compute the phase changes in real time, their system uses a hardware accelerator on a Xilinx Zynq MPSoC.
