The Industrial Vocational Education Centre, the progenitor to RRC Polytech, was founded in the mid-1930s by three Winnipeggers: R.J. Johns, T.O. Durin, and Otto Peters. The center was renamed Manitoba Technical Institute (MTI) in 1948, and it became Manitoba's first public post-secondary vocational school.
