After completing your academic program, F-1 students have a 60-day grace period to leave the U.S., apply for OPT, or change to another visa status.

Optional Practical Training (OPT): Enables F-1 graduates to work off-campus in their field of study for up to 12 months after completing their program. STEM OPT Extension: Students in eligible STEM fields may receive an additional 24-month extension, alongside the 12-month OPT, if the employer participates in E-Verify. Curricular Practical Training (CPT): Allows F-1 students to work (paid or unpaid) if the work is integral to their curriculum; authorization must come from RIC’s international office and be secured before starting employment.
