UERJ was founded on December 4, 1950, originally named the University of the Federal District (UDF). It incorporated several pre-existing schools, such as the Faculty of Economic Sciences, Faculty of Law, and Faculty of Medical Sciences. The university was renamed in 1961 to Guanabara State University (UEG) and later became Rio de Janeiro State University (UERJ) in 1975 after the merger of the State of Guanabara and the State of Rio de Janeiro.
UERJ’s main campus is located in Maracanã, a central area in Rio de Janeiro. The campus was developed in the 1960s and continues to serve as the university's hub for education, research, and cultural activities.
UERJ offers 97 undergraduate courses across various fields of study, including Law, Economics, Philosophy, Medicine, and more. The university also provides postgraduate programs and emphasizes research with 346 research groups and over 500 extension projects.
