The Optional Practical Training (OPT) program allows international students on F-1 visas to work in the United States for up to 12 months after completing their degree. Students can apply for OPT to gain practical experience in their field of study, and those in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields may be eligible for a 24-month extension, allowing for a total of 36 months of work authorization.
To apply for OPT, students must first receive approval from their designated school official (DSO) at Saint Peter's University, who will recommend OPT in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS). After receiving the recommendation, students must submit Form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization, along with the required fee and supporting documents to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).
