The School of Visual Arts New York City (SVA NYC) is a for-profit private art school located in New York City.

School of Visual Arts History

Silas H. Rhodes and Burne Hogarth founded the School of Visual Arts in 1947 as the Cartoonists and Illustrators School, with three teachers and 35 students. It was renamed the School of Visual Arts in 1956, and its first degrees were awarded in 1972. It established a Master of Fine Arts program in painting, drawing, and sculpture in 1983.

The School of Visual Arts has over 1,100 faculty members and over 3,000 students. It is accredited by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and the National Association of Schools of Art and Design, and it offers 11 undergraduate and 22 graduate degree programs.

School of Visual Arts infrastructure & services

Campus

The campus of the School of Visual Arts includes several buildings in the Gramercy Park neighborhood on Manhattan's east side and the Chelsea neighborhood on Manhattan's west side. On Ludlow Street in the Lower East Side, there is a residence hall. It had a branch campus in Savannah, Georgia, from 1994 to 1997, but it was closed due to a lawsuit filed by the Savannah College of Art and Design.

Library

The School of Visual Arts library houses books, periodicals, audio recordings, films, and other media; the Milton Glaser Design Study Center and Archives, which houses the collections of Chermayeff & Geismar, Seymour Chwast, Heinz Edelmann, Milton Glaser, Steven Heller, Ed McCabe, James McMullan, Tony Palladino, George Tscherny, and Henry Wolf; and the SVA Archives.

Housing services

The residential community provides housing services to the School of Visual Arts. SVA has several residence halls for students to choose from, including The 23rd Street Residence (formerly New Residence) is an apartment-style dormitory for new students located at 215 East 23rd Street. The 24th Street Residence is a 14-story, 146,000-square-foot residence hall that opened in August 2016. Magnum Real Estate Group and 40 North purchased the site from the nonprofit International Center for the Disabled in April 2015 for $32.25 million. It houses 505 students in 242 suites, including office space, and serves as the school's flagship residence hall. The Ludlow Residence, located at 101 Ludlow Street (across from Delancey Street) on the Lower East Side, first opened its doors in 2009. There are 259 single and 47 double rooms in this tower.

Medical services

The Student Health Center at the School of Visual Arts provides medical services. A member of the clinical staff will answer your call and determine whether you can be helped and treated through telemedicine or in person. Staff is on-site to assist you with your medical needs. All visit forms and questionnaires can now be completed online. The mission of Student Health Services is to provide high-quality services to meet your primary healthcare needs while attending the School of Visual Arts. The staff at the center is compassionate and professional, and it provides services to improve your physical, mental, and social health.

Students clubs

The School of Visual Arts Student Association offers numerous opportunities for students to strengthen their bonds with others in their department or college through academic and professional student clubs/organizations, as well as make social connections with other graduate and professional students through clubs like the Outdoor Adventure Club. Clubs register with the Student Engagement and Leadership office on a semester basis and are organised through the Visual Arts Student Association (VASA). Students can join or participate in any registered club's activities. If a student has a specific interest, they can form a club if one does not already exist. During the summer term, clubs are not active.

Sports and fitness

The Recreation Center at the School of Visual Arts offers sports and fitness facilities. There is a gymnasium, a fitness center, a group exercise room, and full locker rooms at the Recreation Center. Recreational, wellness, and fitness programs, as well as intramural sports, are offered at the facilities. The fitness center has cardio equipment and a strength and conditioning area.

The residential life at the School of Visual Arts strives to support its students both inside and outside of the classroom. Students who live on campus become part of a unique community of artists who live in a safe, diverse, and supportive environment. The Ludlow Residence is a traditional-style residence hall with single and double rooms. Student Safety

The Office of Security Services at the School of Visual Arts is in charge of keeping the campus safe and secure. Its primary responsibilities include patrolling campus and staffing security desks, assisting and coordinating with first responders in emergencies, investigating student, faculty, and staff reports, and collecting campus crime statistics for the US Department of Education. The success of the office is heavily reliant on the cooperation of all those whom it is tasked with protecting.
