Student Support

SOAS University of London provides comprehensive academic, personal, wellbeing, disability, financial, immigration and career support. Each student is assigned an Academic Advisor for guidance on academic progress and personal development, while departmental Student Support Officers assist with programme-related matters. SOAS also offers peer mentoring and collaborative student learning to help students adapt and develop academic skills.

The Student Advice and Wellbeing Service provides confidential mental-health and counselling support, including individual sessions, group activities and workshops, both online and in person. Students can also access specialist disability and neurodiversity support, including Study Inclusion Plans, exam adjustments, assistive technology and guidance for Disabled Students’ Allowance applications.

International students receive free confidential advice on visas, immigration, finance and funding, while the Careers Service provides one-to-one career guidance, CV and application advice, practice interviews, skills workshops, employer events, internships and job opportunities through CareersZONE. SOAS also offers multi-faith chaplaincy and pastoral support, contributing to an inclusive environment for students from diverse cultural and religious backgrounds.

Student Life

Student life at SOAS University of London is diverse, international and socially active, with more than 5,500 students from around 130 countries and a strong multicultural atmosphere. Students can join 200+ societies and sports clubs, covering cultural, political, religious, academic, artistic and sporting interests, as well as participate in student campaigns, media and volunteering.

The Students’ Union plays a central role in campus life, organising cultural, religious and political events as well as social activities such as karaoke and comedy. Its Junior Common Room provides a space for students to meet, study, attend society activities and socialise. The central Bloomsbury location also gives students easy access to museums, galleries, theatres, restaurants, cafés and London's cultural attractions, including the British Museum and British Library.

Students can also benefit from on-campus employment opportunities, including student ambassador, content creator and Students’ Union roles, while Welcome Week and other activities help new students build friendships and become familiar with the university and London. Overall, SOAS offers a student experience centred on international diversity, cultural exchange, intellectual discussion, activism and community participation.

Housing facilities (Accommodation)

SOAS University of London offers a range of student accommodation in central and Greater London, including university and intercollegiate halls, shared flats and houses, and studio accommodation. Many residences are located within 5–45 minutes of the Bloomsbury campus, and university halls generally provide security, study spaces, laundry facilities and internet access. For 2026/27, options include International Hall, College Hall, Connaught Hall, Garden Halls, Dinwiddy House, Wood Green Hall, Paul Robeson House, Handel Mansions and Cordwainers Court, with both catered and self-catered options available.

International Hall, for example, is around a five-minute walk from SOAS and accommodates approximately 860 residents, offering catered rooms as well as self-catered studios, study areas, laundry facilities and 24-hour support from wardens and residential advisers. Dinwiddy House, primarily for first-year undergraduates, provides en-suite rooms in shared flats with communal kitchens and is approximately 20 minutes' walk from campus. Postgraduate students can choose from residences such as Paul Robeson House, International Hall, Garden Halls and Handel Mansions, with options ranging from shared-bathroom rooms to en-suite rooms and studios. SOAS also provides accessible accommodation with adapted rooms at selected residences and assistance for students with specific access requirements.

Student Safety

SOAS University of London maintains a range of campus security, safeguarding and reporting measures to support student safety. The university uses CCTV, access-control systems and security monitoring across its buildings, while student ID cards are used to control access to campus buildings and the library. SOAS also operates a Campus Safety service 24 hours a day, 365 days a year for reporting security concerns.

The university's Report + Support system allows students to report bullying, harassment, discrimination, hate crime, sexual misconduct and other concerns either anonymously or with their contact details. Students can also access confidential wellbeing and counselling support when they experience distress or safety-related incidents. SOAS has safeguarding procedures and policies covering areas such as sexual and gender-based violence, discrimination and student welfare, while its Prevent and safeguarding framework aims to maintain a safe and inclusive learning environment.
