Everything You Need to Know About Application Requirements at Sonoma State University

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution: Candidates must hold a four-year degree before enrolling in a master’s program. 

Minimum GPA requirement: Typically a 2.50 GPA in the last 60 semester (or 90 quarter) units or in overall undergraduate coursework, for general eligibility. 

Department / program-specific criteria: Apart from general requirements, each graduate program may impose additional standards (e.g. prerequisites, portfolios, exams). 

GRE / GMAT / standardized exams: Some programs require GRE / GMAT, others may waive them. For example, the SSU Biology master’s program does not require GRE, though applicants may still submit it. 

Letters of recommendation: Often required (e.g. in Biology program two letters recommended). 

Statement of purpose / research goals: Applicants should articulate professional goals and research / academic interest. 

Dual application process: Graduate applicants often submit to both the university (SSU) via Cal State Apply and to the specific department / program (to satisfy program deadlines and criteria).
