Introduction

Founded in 1976 with the goal of drawing the best talent and practices from around the world, St. George’s University (SGU) has become a center for academic excellence worldwide. SGU has contributed over 19,000 physicians to the global physician workforce, with students, graduates, and faculty from over 150 countries.

SGU School of Medicine has a four-year Doctor of Medicine degree program or offers five-, six-, and seven-year Medical Degree Pathways, and is committed to student success within an international academic environment. Students also have a unique opportunity to begin their medical education in Grenada or the UK and complete their clinical rotations in our 75+ affiliated hospitals in US or UK. SGU has developed long-standing relationships with many hospital and clinical center partners in the US and UK. These trusted connections allow our students to gain a breadth of knowledge and gain valuable international experience.

Thanks to an international partnership with Northumbria University (NU), St. George’s University provides the opportunity for students to earn a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree and begin their studies in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK through the St. George’s University of Grenada School of Medicine/Northumbria University Four-Year MD Program, as well as Five- and Six-Year Medical Degree Pathways (SGU/NU). More than 2,000 medical students have chosen to take the SGU/NU pathway starting in Newcastle since its commencement in 2007.

SGU operates with rolling intake and The School of Medicine in Grenada begins first-term classes in August, January, and April. The UK Pathway begins in January or September.

Student Support

St. George’s University helped establish the concept of international medical education and strives to be at the forefront of educating students to meet the demands of the modern practice of medicine. Students at SGU receive support throughout their medical education, from student support services during the preclinical and basic sciences years to ongoing support from the Office of Career Guidance and Student Development when students enter the clinical years and thereafter.  

St. George’s University’s Department of Educational Services (DES), provides access to 290 small study groups to help students in their chosen field of study. Time management, study and test-taking skills, and help with reducing anxiety are just a few of the services offered by Close to 100 percent of the University’s students avail themselves of the support offered through a variety of innovative programs.

The Office of Career Guidance and Student Development (OCG) assists students in the Doctor of Medicine program to find their way through residency training and licensure procedures effectively. Faculty and alumni staff the OCG, who advise SGU students when preparing for licensing examinations. They offer counseling in specialty and residency selection, as well as when students go through the application process in the US and UK. Areas that students are supported within are preparation for the required comprehensive examinations, the USMLE Step 1, clinical rotation time schedules, and residency training opportunities.

Security officers patrol SGU grounds 24/7, every day of the year. Security officers are subjected to background investigations prior to employment.

Faculty

St. George’s University School of Medicine (SGUSOM) is accredited by the Grenada Medical and Dental Council (GMDC). GMDC has been reviewed by the U.S. National Committee on Foreign Medical Education and Accreditation (NCFMEA), a panel of experts organized by the U.S. Department of Education, which determined that GMDC uses standards that are comparable to the standards used to accredit medical schools in the United States.

In addition, students at SGU are exposed to:

The True Blue campus is at the top of a peninsula in the southwest of Grenada in the Caribbean, it is a beautiful combination of Georgian architecture that is visually enhanced with vivid Caribbean colors. There are more than 65 buildings spread across 42 acres of land beside the vibrant seaside location.

The campus strives to keep up with the latest technologies and learning environments, featuring a modern library, lecture halls, study spaces, laboratories. There are also non-academic amenities on campus, such as a bank, a playing field, dining outlets, dormitories, a security center, and of course, a gorgeous beachfront. In day-to-day life, students can visit the psychological services center, healthcare clinic, as well as the multi-purpose fitness & wellness center. SGU operates a shuttle service regularly (from 7am to 2am) around the campus and also within a 5-mile area around the campus.

Northumbria University Campus, Newcastle, UK

SGU students who choose to begin their medical education in the UK will study at SGU’s partner, Northumbria University’s City Campus in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Northumbria University has invested over £250 million in its estate over the last decade.

Technical facilities at the university support research and ensure students are equipped to have the practical tools to get the most out of their chosen medical degree pathway. The University has modern laboratories, prototyping workshops, CAD suites, media laboratories and more.

The four-year MD program is typically completed within four calendar years and has a 157-week curriculum.

The program has two phases: (1) Basic Sciences and (2) Clinical Training.

  • Year 1 (in Grenada or UK) and Year 2 (in Grenada); Basic Sciences. Learning is through traditional lectures and laboratory sessions augmented by small–group sessions, in addition to learning exercises that are case–based
  • Year 3 and Year 4; Clinical Training. At SGU affiliated hospitals and clinics across the United States or the United Kingdom using bedside teaching and augmented by lectures, small groups, and directed study.

The five-year medical degree pathway at St. George’s University, a Caribbean medical school, is designed specifically for students with Advanced Level or International Baccalaureate credentials who have a desire to become a doctor. 

  • Students build on an existing academic background in science with entry-level medical degree coursework in anatomy, physiology, and other foundational sciences.
  • The beginning medical degree coursework will set our five-year students up for success in the basic science courses and clinical sciences phases of the MD degree program in SGU’s medical school.

Program description

Students with secondary school credentials (high school) who need to study a complete course in the foundation sciences before beginning the medical degree program can apply for the seven–year Doctor of Medicine pathway.

Students will focus on preclinical sciences, social sciences, and humanities in the first 3 years. Entering the seven–year entry point will prepare students for the 4-Year Medical Degree Program by providing a strong support system around a solid preclinical curriculum.
