Tsinghua University was founded in 1911 as "Tsing Hua Imperial College," initially serving as a preparatory school for Chinese students planning to study in the United States.
The university was renamed "Tsing Hua College" in 1912, established its university section in 1925, and adopted the name "National Tsing Hua University" in 1928. During the Japanese invasion in 1937, it merged with Peking University and Nankai University to form the National South-West Associated University.
After 1949, the original National Tsing Hua University moved to Taiwan, while the Tsinghua University in Beijing was restructured in 1952 as a polytechnic institute focusing on engineering. Starting in the late 1970s, it expanded into a comprehensive research university, re-establishing various departments and incorporating multidisciplinary studies.
