Staying in the U.S. after OPT typically requires a change of immigration status, such as obtaining an H-1B visa (for specialty occupations), enrolling in a new academic program, or having a employer sponsor you for a permanent residency (green card). The UCO Career Development Center can help with job search strategies, but visa sponsorship is between the student and their employer.
It is crucial to apply for OPT up to 90 days before your program end date and no later than 60 days after. The processing time by USCIS can take 90-120 days or longer. The international student advisors at UCO strongly recommend applying early to ensure you receive your Employment Authorization Document (EAD) in time to start working after graduation.
