The University of Crete also known as UoC is a research university located in Rethymnon and Heraklion on the island of Crete in Greece. The university was established in 1973 and started functioning in the year 1977. The university currently enrolls 18,000 plus students and employs over 900 staff.

The University of Crete was established in 1973 and admitted its first students in the 1977–78 academic year. It operates two main campuses: Rethymno (Gallos Campus) and Heraklion (Voutes Campus).
In 2023, the University of Crete was ranked among the top 1,591 universities worldwide by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings and second among Greek universities included in the ranking.
The University of Crete consists of five faculties: Philosophy, Education, Social Sciences, Sciences & Technology, and Medicine. These are divided into 17 departments, with the humanities and social sciences in Rethymno and the sciences and medicine in Heraklion.
