The University of Eastern Finland was established through a merger of two formerly independent universities, the University of Joensuu and the University of Kuopio. These ended to exist when the University of Eastern Finland began to operate in January 2010.

UEF was officially established on January 1, 2010, through the merger of the University of Joensuu (founded in 1969) and the University of Kuopio (founded in 1972). This merger was part of a nationwide initiative to strengthen Finnish higher education through strategic collaboration.
UEF emphasizes a multidisciplinary approach, with strong research and education in areas such as ageing and health, digital learning, environmental change, cultural encounters, and education. It is also recognized for its work in forestry, optics, information technology, and studies related to Russia and border regions.
Key milestones include the launch of dentistry education in 2010, the addition of logopedics (speech therapy) in 2020, and engineering education in 2022. In 2020, UEF also celebrated its 10th anniversary by launching its long-term strategy, UEF 2030 – Seizing a Sustainable Future.
