University of Hartford history started in the year 1957 by joining the Hartford Art School, Hillyer College, and Hartt School. The Hartford Art School was founded by a group of women in Hartford in 1877. Hillyer Colleges was created in 1879 as a part of the Hartford YMCA and the Hartt School was established in 1920 by Julius Hartt and Moshe Paranov. The motto of the University is The Humanity.
