3D printed mask that can detect tuberculosis early

In contrast, the current method of diagnosing tuberculosis through a blood test can take weeks and is unable to distinguish between live and dormant TB. A team of researchers led by Professor Mike Barer is revolutionising the way tuberculosis is diagnosed by creating a 3D printed insert that can be added to a simple face mask. This invention has the potential to save millions of lives worldwide each year through early detection of the disease. The insert was designed and printed at the University and can reliably catch and retain live tuberculosis (TB) bacteria after a patient who may exhibit symptoms has worn it for 30 minutes. The inserts can be removed safely.

Mercury Imaging X-ray Spectrometer

The BepiColombo mission is now travelling to Mercury with an X-ray spectrometer called the MIXS. As part of the UK's scientific contribution to the project, it will be able to report on the planet's surface composition once the craft enters orbit in 2025. By gathering fluorescent X-rays that are released by rocks upon stimulation by high-energy solar X-rays, MIXS will examine the surface of the innermost planet. In order to calibrate the data, MIXS will measure those solar X-rays. The rocks' chemical makeup will be discovered through dataset analysis.

First ‘virtual asthma patient’ created

In order to help generate more precise and timely predictions about whether new medications would be successful and beneficial to patients, Dr. Himanshu Kaul has developed a "virtual asthma patient" who may take part in clinical studies. Dr. Kaul is working with specialists from the University's Schools of Engineering and Mathematics as well as the Department of Respiratory Sciences on his ground-breaking research project, "The Lung Pharmacome," using agent-based modelling. In order to conduct patient-specific "virtual clinical trials" by 2025, the project intends to create a functional mathematical computer patient model by 2024.
