The University of Lucerne (Universität Luzern) is the youngest of the twelve accredited universities in Switzerland, officially established in 2000. Despite its recent founding, it is rooted in a tradition of higher education dating back to 1574 with the establishment of a Jesuit college.

Non-EU/EFTA students must apply for a visa at the Swiss embassy or consulate in their home country at least three months before entering Switzerland. The visa process takes 6–12 weeks, and students cannot be matriculated without a valid visa. Under no circumstances should you enter Switzerland on a tourist visa, as it cannot be converted to a residence permit
All students must register with the local authorities (Einwohnerdienste) in their residential district within 14 days of arriving in Switzerland. After registration, students apply for a residence permit from the cantonal migration office. Within 14 days of arrival, non-EU/EFTA citizens must also register with their commune and apply for a residence permit
