International students who complete a degree program at UMass Lowell and hold an F-1 student visa may apply for the OPT program. Eligibility requires the student to have maintained full-time enrollment and completed their studies in the U.S.
Students can apply for OPT through the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). They must first get approval from the UMass Lowell International Students and Scholars Office (ISSO) and submit the required application materials to USCIS.
OPT allows graduates to work in jobs directly related to their major field of study. The work can be part-time (up to 20 hours per week) during the school year and full-time during breaks or after graduation.
Students can work for any employer as long as the job is related to their field of study. The employer is not required to sponsor the student, but the student must report their employment to the university’s ISSO.
